🚗 What Is a Transponder Key?

A transponder key looks like a normal car key, but inside the plastic head is a radio-frequency identification (RFID) chip.

• “Transponder” = transmit + respond

• The chip communicates with the car’s immobilizer system

🔐 How Transponder Keys Work

1. You insert the key into the ignition (or bring it near, in some systems)

2. The car sends a radio signal to the key

3. The transponder chip responds with a unique coded signal

4. If the code matches what the vehicle expects:

   • The immobilizer disengages

   • The engine is allowed to start

5. If the code is wrong or missing:

   • The engine will crank but not start (or won’t crank at all)

🧩 Types of Transponder Keys

1️⃣ Fixed-code transponder

• Same code every time

• Older systems

• Less secure

2️⃣ Rolling / encrypted transponder

• Code changes each time

• Much harder to clone

• Common in newer vehicles

3️⃣ Transponder-only key

• Starts the car

• No remote lock/unlock buttons

4️⃣ Transponder + remote key

• Combines immobilizer chip with remote locking

• Includes Remote Head Keys and flip keys

🛠 Programming & Replacement

To replace or add a transponder key:

• The key must be:

  • Physically cut to match the locks

  • Electronically programmed to the vehicle

• Programming is done using:

  • Dealer diagnostic tools

  • Automotive locksmith equipment

• Some cars allow on-board programming if you already have a working key
